The event will follow a similar format to the Ryder Cup, the biennial event between teams from the United States and Europe. Each country will be represented by an eight-member team, which will compete in matches over two days to determine which country gets to hold the Caucasus Cup trophy until the next year’s competition. The Caucasus Cup is planned to be an annual event, with the 2015 inaugural competition taking place in Kachreti, Georgia at the Ambassadori Golf Club, and the 2016 event taking place at Ararat Golf Club in Yerevan, Armenia.
“This event will be very exciting, and we think it will be very important as both the National Golf Association of Armenia and Ambassadori Golf Club work to grow the sport of golf in their respective countries,” said Mr. Karen Hovhannisyan, the Armenian association’s General Secretary and the golf instructor at the Ararat Golf Club. “We are very pleased to be working with Ambassadori Golf Club to make golf a popular activity in the Caucasus region.”
“This will be a wonderful way to create awareness about this great game in the countries of Georgia and Armenia,” said Samuel Smart, the Director of Golf at Ambassadori Golf Club. “As the only golf courses in our respective countries, we feel it is incumbent on us to do all we can to increase participation in the sport.”
A contingent from the Ararat Golf Club traveled to Kachreti in June of 2014 to participate in the Ambassadori Golf Club’s opening tournament. “The grand opening tournament was an amazing event,” said Mr. Hovhannisyan. “The hotel, pool, golf course and restaurant are first-class, and our hosts were as gracious as could be. We could not be more pleased that the Ambassadori will host the first Caucasus Cup.”
